The RS was built so that Porsche could enter racing formulae that demanded that a certain minimum number of production cars were made. Compared with a standard 911S, the Carrera 2.7 RS had a larger engine (2687cc) developing 210hp, revised and stiffened suspension, a 'ducktail' rear spoiler, larger brakes, wider rear wheels and rear bumpers. The image of the white car with coloured script along its flanks has seamlessly passed into motoring legend and has itself been used as a marketing tool by Porsche for many of its later lightweight cars. Performance aside, it is the image and styling that made the Carrera RS the success story that it is today and it is that image that is offered now. But more than that, it is coupled with a far more drivable Porsche underneath, with a bigger engine, a more comfortable ride and a few more creature comforts.
From its production in 1984 as one of the first 3.2 litre Carrera models, this exciting example has enjoyed its life as a well loved and cared for car benefitting from a complete up-to-date and comprehensive service history. Covering an average of less than 4000 miles a year and having had a full engine rebuild 14,000 miles ago (including a new clutch and short-shift kit for the correct 915 gearbox), this was a fine example to begin with. Subsequently, this year, it has undergone a full 'backdate' conversion to 1973 RS specification by 911 Rennsport. Genuine steel Porsche wings are used with backdate conversions along with lightweight 1973 RS long bonnet and new front lamps with chrome headlamp rims. The correct lightweight RS front and rear bumpers have been used with the all important lightweight RS ducktail deck lid. Door frames and window trims have all been polished and door handles chrome plated for the correct RS appearance. Finished off with a single Durant door mirror, it now certainly looks the part. Attention to detail is the key with this one being fully re-sprayed in the most popular colour for an RS of the period in the correct colour code Porsche 'Light Yellow' and finished off with the correct Carrera RS decals in contrasting black. The interior hasn't been forgotten either with a full conversion including lightweight RS seats, lightweight door panels and finished with a period Momo Prototipo steering wheel.
Mechanically the whole car has been stripped, checked and updated where necessary including a full suspension strip and rebuild set as well as lowered with 'fast-road' geometry settings and benefitting from precise steering through '911 Turbo' jointed control arms and a new full sport exhaust system. All this giving the driver excellent feedback without the price tag of the original.
