Lot 204 - 1985 12987 500SL Roadster
|Result||Sold - £2,688|
The SL is a stunning grand tourer manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation derives from the German Sport Leicht, or Sport Lightweight and was first applied to the 300SL 'Gullwing' named also after its Gullwing or upward-opening doors. The term now refers to the marketing variations of the vehicle including the numerous engine configurations spanning over five design generations. The R129, launched in 1989, was based on the shortened floorpan of the Mercedes-Benz W124 and featured many innovative details for the time, for instance electronically controlled damping (optional) and a hidden, automatically extending roll-over bar. The R107's rather dated rear diagonal swing axle gave way to a modern multi-link axle. The number of standard features was high, with electric action for the windows, mirrors, seats and convertible top.
Given the performance and specification available, it is a wonder these cars don't attract prices well in excess of five figures. They certainly should and might be something to consider investing in now..
