The ancestry of the Alfa Romeo Duetto started with the Pininfarina designed Spider Speciale Aerodynamica shown at the 1961 Turin Motor Show. Concept to production took a little longer in those days so the Duetto only came into fruition in 1966. Initially it was not well received and quickly earned the nickname 'Osso di Seppoa' (cuttlefish). The name 'Duetto' came about from a competition held by Alfa Romeo to distinguish the car from its Giulia 105 series stable mates, the coupé and berlina and was accepted for its reference to the two seat layout.
Records show that this very early and rare matching numbers 1570cc Duetto Spider offered today was manufactured in right hand drive format in 1966 and first registered in the UK on the 19th July 1967. The history file has several old MoT test certificates and tax discs dating back to the early 1990s with invoices recorded since 1989. More recently, some significant mechanical works have been carried out by specialists including a rebuilt gearbox, new clutch assembly, replacement battery, rebuilt cylinder head, rebuilt carburettors, carburettor mountings, service and the addition of electronic ignition and new ignition leads. The mohair hood was replaced approximately two years ago and the interior trim has been refreshed with new door cards, floor mats and the seats have been re-trimmed in leather. The repainted steel wheels complement the Alfa Romeo Rosso coachwork that also displays excellent door gaps. Inside, the boot looks tidy with only a small tear in the boot mat. Importantly, the area surrounding the fuel tank and fuel tank lip appears in good condition. The engine bay is also very tidy having been subjected to an engine out repaint in recent years. This Alfa comes with an MoT test certificate valid until mid February 2014 and Historic status road fund licence valid until the end of February 2014. With prices of these Duetto Spiders approaching in the region of £25,000 to £30,000, this rare UK registered right hand drive Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider represents excellent value given its modest estimate.
