Lot 375 - 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190SL
|Estimate||£48,000 - £58,000|
|Result||Sold - £62,720|
The Mercedes-Benz 190SL made history at the New York International Motor Sports Show in February 1954 by being the first new production Mercedes- Benz to be unveiled outside of Germany. The impression given by the 190SL, alongside the bigger 300SL, was neat, sporty and with dashing lines. This was the trait of Mercedes-Benz designers Karl Wilfret and Walter Hacket. Despite opinions, the statistics tell their own tale as between May 1955 and February 1963, 25,881 of these cars were produced - it was a huge success for Mercedes-Benz. Its engine boasted four inline cylinders with a chain driven overhead camshaft and two Solex 44PHH carburettors delivering a respectable 108bhp for that era. The body was a monocoque design, welded to the shortened chassis of the type 180 saloon. A racing version with aluminium doors and a small windscreen was never produced although these parts could be ordered from the Factory for weekend racing.
This extremely honest example of the 190SL has been owned by the same family for the last 28 years with a full restoration taking place in 1986. Since then, due to family commitments and various other cars in the collection, it has been used infrequently. It still maintains the original engine, carburettors and running gear but also benefits from a stainless steel exhaust system and a hardtop painted in the correct matching silver. Included in the history file is a photographic record of the restoration as well as bills and invoices relating to works done over its lifetime. A clock is currently being sourced for the dash board and full road tax, MoT test certificate and V5C are also supplied. Starting on the button, this extremely attractive example proved to be a willing companion on one of the first real sunny days this year. However should the weather turn, a new mohair hood is also supplied and the 190SL is one of those rare classic sportscars with which you really can operate the hood with one hand.
