Lot 397 - 1989 Ford Escort RS Turbo
|Result||Sold - £4,256|
Little introduction is required on how the Ford Escort mobilised the British public and took on all comers both on the world rally scene and circuits across the globe. With humble underpinnings, the various incarnations became progressively more competitive and complicated until the Escort Mk. IV arrived in early 1986. Codenamed within Ford as 'Erika-86', it was instantly recognisable as an updated version of the previous model with a smooth style nose and the 'straked' rear lamp clusters smoothed over. Optional new features included a mechanical anti‐lock braking system (standard on RS Turbo models), a fuel computer on fuel-injected models and a heated windshield. The RS Turbo was the one to have though with a 1.6 litre CVH fuel-injected engine twinned with a Garrett T3 Turbo producing 132bhp through the rear wheels.
Originally acquired in 1994 it has been owned and used by the vendor's wife for the last 19 years. Shortly after purchase, it was restored meticulously by specialists, Carcraft in South West London. All bodywork has subsequently been maintained by Carcraft who know the car well. 19 MoT test certificates can also be found in the history file and this represents a good example of a period of motoring history that bred the era of the 'hot hatch'.
