The Alfa Romeo Spider was produced from 1966 to 1993 and is widely regarded as a design classic. It remained in production for almost three decades with only minor aesthetic and mechanical changes. The last Spider was produced in April 1993 and was the last rear wheel drive Alfa Romeo produced before Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione was introduced on 23rd May, 2012.The first presentation of the car, as a prototype, was at the Turin Motor Show in 1961; however, the continuing success of existing models and the economic challenges facing Italy at the time, meant that the first pre-launch production Spiders only began to emerge from the Pininfarina production line at the end of 1965. Unnamed at launch, the name 'Duetto' was chosen in a write-in competition in Italy. The Italian firm of Pininfarina was responsible for the design of the body; in fact, the Duetto was the last project with which founder Battista 'Pinin' Farina was personally associated.
Originally supplied to the American market in 1966, this Spider was imported from California to the UK in 1989. It was then up-rated to a 1750cc engine from its standard 1600 unit and a light restoration undertaken. The car is described by the vendor as both solid and original with no rust. A new hood has been fitted and the interior now benefits from a retro style stereo but with the added bonus of iPod connectivity. A comprehensive history with plenty of MoT test certificates accompany this pretty example including a current one expiring towards the end of 2013. A spirited example of one of the most charming cars ever built.
