Lot 232 - 1970 Snake Pit by George Barris
|Result||Sold - £17,050|
Constructed by the renowned 'King of Kustomizers', George Barris and a team consisting of Harry Bradley, Joe Bailon, Jay Ohrberg and built in the early 1970's, the Snake Pit took four years to complete. The purpose of the project was, quite simply, to attack international speed records.
The outer 'skin' was completely handbuilt and finished with 30 coats of lacquer complimenting the eyecatching, orange and pearl white paintwork. Fitted with no less than six Ford Cobra V8 engines, each displacing 351 cubic inches and with a projected total of approximately 2,000 horse power, this 23 foot long monster is breath taking in every way. The six engines, 12 Holley four-barrel carburettors, 48 exhausts, two Ford C-6 automatic transmissions and a pair of Pontiac rear axles contribute to making this extra-ordinary vehicle a mouth watering addition to any serious collector or museum. George Barris is synonymous for making 'one off specials' and is particularly famous for the Batmobile, KITT from Knightrider and the Monkee Mobile but there surely cannot be many he has built to rival the 'Snake Pit'! Estimated to have been valued at $100,000 when completed and offered, non-running, at no reserve today, such a unique piece of engineering is sure to whet the appetite of collectors as well as generate huge interest from both sides of the Atlantic.
