The Jaguar E-Type was 10 years old and needed new life. History repeated itself and it was a huge success when Jaguar debuted its robust new engine in a sports car instead of the saloon for which it was designed. Despite its sports-car heritage, Jaguar depended on saloons for its survival and had developed its twelve to power them with sufficient torque and refinement. It was beefy enough to handle up to 7.0 litres displacement, but an initial capacity of 5.3 was chosen. The all-aluminium single-cam V12 was about three inches longer than the inline-six, and though it outweighed the six by less than 75lbs, it still tipped the scales at almost 700lbs. Jaguar rated it at 272hp in Europe and 314 in the United States, though a realistic American figure was 250bhp at 6000rpm.
The new engine fitted in the same bay as the six, but for better legroom Jaguar shelved the convertible's 96 inch wheelbase and gave all Series III's the 105 inch span previously exclusive to the 2+2 coupés. A larger radiator inlet with formal grillwork and subtle wheel arches to clear wider tyres were other changes. Larger, softer in nature, with weight redistributed 53/47, the Series III had lost the wilds of its youth but gained the long legged touring profile to which it was arguably better suited. Robert Bell in The Motor was quoted as saying at the time that they all expected to try a new engine. What in fact they drove was a new car. Not a yowling, aggressive Ferrari-like machine, with which, perhaps, most people associate a V12 engine, but a very smooth, quiet and refined grand touring sports car.
Finished in the orginal classic Jaguar colour scheme of Heather with Ox Blood leather interior, it is due to little use and the current owner being someone who looks for perfection and practicality in all his collection of classic cars and motorcycles that this car has been subject to extensive re-commissioning over the last year including having the body work behind the rear wheels refurbished and then the entire car repainted to a high standard in the original colour. Underneath, the car has been completely cleaned and under-sealed. New carpets have been made and fitted throughout and the leather has been cleaned and lightly coloured to bring back the striking colour combination between the inside and outside of this car. Fitted with a manual gearbox, the vendor wishing to be able to drive this car to the South of France without worry of a breakdown, has had the mechanical components checked and any repairs required have been carried out; the front suspension has been rebuilt using new bushes, all the rear suspension bushes have been replaced, a new brake servo fitted, both the front and rear brakes have been rebuilt, new wheel bearings fitted, a new clutch slave cylinder and all the water hoses replaced. This Jaguar V12 comes with a comprehensive file of bills and invoices stretching back to the 1970's. Complete with the original Jaguar Passport stating original delivery to a Mr. Peter Scott of Weir and having been looked after by noted Jaguar performance specialist, Alan Collins in Maldon for most of its life, ABH 320 is offered with an MoT test certificate which expires in June 2012 and Swansea V5C registration certificate.
