Lot 1 - 1990 Lotus Elan
|Odometer reading||110,000 miles|
|Result||Sold - £3,501|
Formerly the property of Team Lotus chief engineer and designer Chris Murphy. The car was first registered to Lotus Cars and then Team Lotus Racing. It was kept by Chris Murphy for his personal use when Lotus Cars went into administration. H104 SPW was used during the development of the S2 Elan, being frequently driven by Formula One competitor and Lotus Test driver John Miles. Consequently, the car is fitted with a host of modifications and improvements including an improved steering rack and dampers along with air conditioning, stainless steel exhaust, and the chassis wax oil treated.
Until acquired by the Vendor in 2002, all maintenance was carried out at Ketteringham Hall, the former Team Lotus Headquarters. Sold with the car is an amazing service history folder which must be viewed, original handbooks for the car and radio, and even a copy of the documentary video made by The Central Office of Information about Team Lotus in 1992 in which H104 SPW features . This file includes a biography of Chris Murphy and a resume of his Professional racing career, photos of Chris and others, as well as a letter to the Vendor from Chris describing H104 SPW as ""possibly the best road car I have owned, from a sensory point of view. I sold the car purely for practical reasons"".
This truly is a unique piece of Lotus History and a fantastic car. The car is furnished in Pacific Blue body colour, and Blue with Brown fabric and leather material. The recorded mileage is not reflective of the true wear as Team Lotus upgraded the components frequently and maintained it to a detail that is just not possible from any private ownership. Since acquisition by the Vendor for his collection 8 years ago the car has been regularly maintained and exercised but little used, covering just 7,600 miles over that period. The car is offered with V5C registration certificate, MoT test certificate valid until September 2011, and road tax license valid until March 2011.
The vendor, who is only selling to make room for a recent acquisition from Historics, describes its handling and performance as superb and extremely lively, and our own experience of the car bears this out. Probably the most important Turbo Elan available, and an unrepeatable example of what is already becoming a fast appreciating Classic.
