Lotus launched the Elan in 1962 and in doing so, created a Brtish motoring icon. Following on from the previous Elite model, the new Elan offered improved handling, performance and had a less fragile feel to its overall design. Below the Elan bonnet sat a twin-cam four cylinder engine, which would become a legend in its own right, powering other classic Lotus models including the Cortina sports-saloons. Initially the Elan came as an open two seater, however, from 1964 a fixed head coupe was also available, both bodies being constructed from GRP and mounted on a separate chassis. So successful was this chassis design that it still forms the basis of today's Lotus cars.
WCV790J was delivered new to a lady owner in Redruth, Cornwall and was sold to its second owner, a Mr G.Lodge of Cornwall, in 1972. It was subsequently sold to its third owner who kept the car until June 2009. Now with its current owner, it is clear to see that much time and money have gone into making this a very special little car.
Having been subject to a completely new galvanised chassis, mechanical and engine rebuild by marques specialists T.J. Lobb in 1992, WCV790J remains in fine order and has covered a mere 21,000 miles since. Furthermore, there are bills and receipts in the history file going back to 1984 and there is even an original service voucher book, with stamps from the 1970s, and original owner's handbook.
