Abarth is an Italian racing car maker founded by Austrian-Italian Carlo Abarth and Italian Armando Scagliarini in Turin in 1949. Carlo Abarth began his well-known association with Fiat in 1952, building the Abarth 1500 Biposto upon Fiat mechanicals.
In the 1960s, Abarth was quite successful in hillclimbing and sports car racing, mainly in classes from 850cc up to 2000cc, competing with Porsche 904 and Ferrari Dino. Hans Herrmann was a factory driver from 1962 until 1965, winning the 500km Nürburgring in 1963 with Teddy Pilette. Later, Johann Abt was promised by Carlo Abarth that he could drive a factory car for free if he won all the races he entered-which Abt nearly did, winning 29 of 30, the 30th being a second.
Along with its racing cars, Abarth produced high-performance exhaust pipes. Later, Abarth diversified in producing various tuning kits for road vehicles, mainly for Fiat. Abarth was also associated in producing sports or racing cars with Porsche and Simca.
The delightful lefthand drive Abarth on sale today is a real wolf in sheep's clothing. The dosile 903cc engine is tuned to output more than 90mph road speeds through its four speed manual gearbox making this a very competitive racing car in its class. In fact, this superb rust free car was modified by Middle Barton Garage in 2007 to participate in the 2008 Tour Brittania where EFC 391A completed 2000 miles in three days finishing 2nd in Class.
Offered in original Beige coachwork with matching Beige trim, the car currently sports Cobra bucket rally seats, full TRS harnesses and original rubber floor mats. The original seats are available if the new owner preferred. Other cosmetic modifications include 13"" Borrani Perforated Alloy Wheels whilst mechanically the car boasts Abarth brakes, Abarth reversed eye front leaf spring suspension with uprated and lowered rear coil springs and adjustable dampers. The recently rebuilt and tuned 903cc engine which has covered only 5000Kms has mechanicals including Abarth manifolds, Dellorto carburetor, lightened flywheel, diaphragm clutch and oil cooler.
This wonderful and increasingly rare 600D Abarth Saloon with V5C Registration certificate represents an inexpensive chance to join the historic race and rally scene.
