Lot 21 - 1956 Bentley S1 Convertible

Lot Number 21
Registration XKK 945
Chassis Number B283 AP
Engine Number BA391
Odometer reading 135,000 miles
Estimate £80,000

Chassis B283AP was supplied by Bentley Motors to coachbuilders James Young ltd of Bromley in late 1955, ordered by Mr S.W.Lewis Esq of Farnborough Engineering Company as a two door coupé to be finished in Tudor Grey over Velvet Green with Champagne hide, design number B.20. A rare car in itself with only three of four examples ever built, Mr Lewis enjoyed the car for some years afterwards and B283AP was maintained by James Young throughout the fifties and sixties. The build cost was substantial and the finished item cost Mr Lewis £6956, easily the price of a large house during that period!

Many years later the decision was made to convert the car to drophead coupé configuration as it presents today, and it's understood that this conversion took place in the mid eighties. Today B283AP is finished in regal red with magnolia hide and red piping and a black mohair power hood and importantly it retains the original registration number XKK 945. The conversion was well executed and finish of the paintwork is excellent, the woodwork has been restored in recent times by a highly regarded specialist according to the vendor.

The vendor states the car drives extremely well and has benefitted from recent work including a new flywheel assembly which was fitted in February 2009, a replacement distributor and high tension leads which, according to the vendor have transformed the way the car drives. Further enhancements include a new three core radiator, thermostat, fuel pump, Kenlowe fan, rebuilt starter motor and all engine side plates and taps were removed, cleaned and the engine thoroughly flushed.

XKK 945 is supplied with a substantial file containing service records from James Young Ltd from 1955-1965, full V5 registration, a number of previous MoT certificates including a current certificate valid to June 2011 and a discreet modern radio has been fitted with an ipod connection which retains the original 1950's facia. Having just five owners from new, XKK 945 is a rare opportunity to obtain a delightful open Bentley S1 which started life as a coachbuilt two door coupé, presented in excellent condition and at a fraction of the cost of a factory built drophead coupé. Many S series Bentley drophead's available today are based on standard steel saloons and XKK 945's coachbuilt underpinnings make this car rarer and undoubtedly more desirable.
